Handcrafted started back in 2012 when a small group of people at Kings Church Durham felt God was calling them to start something to help disadvantaged people in Durham. They started out by running woodwork and gardening activities, giving people the chance to get out of the house and get stuck in, learning new skills and finding new interests. Handcrafted started to grow, taking on their first staff member in 2013 to coordinate their volunteers and projects.
In 2014 they expanded from one member of staff to three and now run placements in woodwork, gardening and house renovation. They partnered with Green Pastures in order to expand services provision and supported accommodation, as many of the trainees are homeless. The unique twist for Handcrafted is that the trainees will help renovate the property, giving them a sense of pride and ownership over their new home before they even move in.
